People generally know Janam ashtmi, as the Birth anniversary day of Lord Krishna but least of them know about Radhaashtmi, the Birth anniversary day of Srimati Radharani who is concomitant of Lord Krishna. Srimati Radharani also appeared to this planet along with Lord Krishna five thousand years ago.
Radha Ashtami is commemorated as birth anniversary of The Goddess Radha.
It falls on Ashtami Tithi during Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month, this year it has came on navami of Bhadrapada month.
Most of the devotees keep fast on this Radha Ashtami day, Goddess Radha is worshipped during madhyan kal, which is actually noon time according to hindu division of the day.
The word Radha comes from the Sanskrit verbal root radh, which means to worship, and the word rani, which means queen. Radharani can be literally translated to mean “the queen of worship.”“Srimati Radharani is the mother of the universe (Radha is parama-devata, the supreme goddess, and She is worship able for everyone. She is the protectress of all, and She is the mother of the entire universe.” —Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi Chapter 4 Verse 89, the spiritual mother of all souls.
How Radharani appeared in this abode itself is very interesting……
“On a half-moon night in the month of Bhadra, King Vrishabhanu came to the Jamuna to bathe and found himself engulfed in a golden aura of pure love. It was emanating from a lotus, which had a baby girl standing on its whorl. When the king returned to the palace with the baby, Queen Kirtida was delighted. She was also shocked that the girl was blind.
“Lord Krishna’s mother, Yashoda, heard that her best friend Kirtida had a baby, so she came to visit along with her husband and her son. Krishna crawled up to the cradle and pulled Himself up and looked in. At that moment, Srimati Radharani’s eyes fluttered and opened wide and blossomed like lotuses. It seems that she did not want to see anything of this world, only the form of Sri Krishna. Everyone was delighted..
Srimati Radharani has a lot of artistic qualities like Singing, Playing on musical instruments, Dancing, Theatricals, Painting, Making the groundwork of jewels, Applying or setting ornaments, Designing a preparation of wreaths etc. which are listed in Brahma-samhita.
So together with Krishna we all should also know about Radharani whose name we generally take when we take Krishna’s name like “Radhe Krishna”, “Hare Krishna”.
