STORY BEHIND HOW RITUAL OF SHRADDHA PERFORMING STARTS
According to Hindu mythology, tradition of offering the Shraddha (donations) during this 16 days of Pitru Paksha is attributed to Karna.
It’s started with Karna who was a charitable person and had donated so much gold and other precious things throughout his life to help the needy peoples and downtrodden. When he died, his soul was taken to the heaven, where he was given gold and jewels to eat. Bemused, he went to Indra (Indra is a leader of devas and the lord of heaven) to know the reason for the same. Indra told him that despite donating many things, you donated gold during your life, you had never donated any food to someone or to your ancestors. Karna reasoned that since he wasn’t aware of his ancestors, he never donated anything. So Indra, allowed Karna to go back to earth to do Shraddha and seek redemption.
It is believed that it is during this 16 days period that one’s ancestors come down to earth to bless their kin. Tarpan, Shraddha and Pind Daan are performed in order to please them. Performing these rituals is also important because it helps one’s ancestors cross over to their fated realms.
In today’s era people are running after modernization & they are least interested in the rituals & the things which are told by our ancestors to perform. People today don’t believe in these things as for them this all is just superstitions.
Especially the young generation they are least interested in any of the ritual. They think that it is just superstitions & wastage of time, money & resources. Yes it’s good to donate something in hospitals, to the people who are really in need of anything, to help poor, to help the handicapped people but it doesn’t mean we not need to do things for our ancestors rest instead of them should donate on other places. We need to fulfill our rituals like Shraadh to have blessings of our ancestors rather than curse. Yes with this we can do these all things also but that is also important.
The word Shraadh may refer to something which is done with complete faith especially for the deceased parents.
People who don’t perform Shraadha are highly criticized & cursed by the pitras. Brahmavaivarta Purana states that during these days our ancestors are there in the subtle form & they accept the descendant’s offerings. The Pitras blessed their descendant’s on getting this. In the scriptures it is said that,” All the dieties are pleased with the pleasing of the Pitras”. So this ritual is very important to perform & the expectations of the ancestors should be fulfilled otherwise they feel dissatisfied & they curse for the same.
So instead of modernization we should perform Shraadha of our Pitras & have their blessings not curse. So we should get updated with time but it doesn’t mean to forget our culture & rituals. So keep on remembering our culture that even foreigners are adopting in their lives to have happiness.
